John 4:42   "They said to the woman, 'We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.'"

Starting Points is a one-year introductory world views curriculum designed to guide students in defining a biblical world view and recognizing world views found in literature, speech, movies, propaganda, and other sources of information they experience in their lives.  This is a rigorous CORE curriculum for the Jr. High level – it is not intended to be added onto a full load of additional curriculum.  Most students only need appropriate math, science and/or foreign language classes during this year of study.  Most weeks, an average student should expect to spend about 2-3 hours PER DAY, 5 days per week (in addition to class time) to prepare adequately for this class.   At the end of the school year, students will earn one full credit in each of the following:

Theology – in depth Bible study focusing on the seven world view questions (What is the nature of God? What is the nature of man? What is the nature of the universe? What is the cause of evil and suffering? What is the basis of ethics and morality? What happens to man at death?  What is the meaning of life and history?)

Literature – analyzing plot, character, theme, as well as understanding the world view of the author

American History – studying the social, educational, religious, and political life during the Reformation and colonial America, leading up to the world view that would shape the founding of our nation and our Constitution; timeline activities included.

Composition – In addition to discussions, class time will include proofreading/editing practice and time to discuss and outline essays as they are assigned.   To prepare for the required compositions in  Starting  Points, we will meet in my home for a six-day writing workshop series in early August.   During these workshops, we will work through portions of the Excellence in Writing Student Writing Intensive Level C, practice the process of writing a quality five-paragraph academic essay, as well as learn and practice MLA formatting.  This is MUCH more fun that it sounds – and also serves as a great way to build fellowship between the students and Mrs. M. prior to the first class.  Please click on the Writing Workshop tab for more specific information.

This course is ideal for 8th grade, although can be beneficial for other students at the discretion of the teacher and parent.
